Writing Research Paper Reflection

During the course, writing a research paper was a daunting task for several reasons. In my academic life, I have been used to writing essays and other forms of writing that do not follow the specific format of a research paper. For instance, most of the essay I have completed so far had different styles of writing which does not conform to the features of a research paper. By going through “Thinking About Process” in lesson 1 to “Finishing English Composition II” in lesson 3, my perspective on research writing changed significantly. However, the major challenge I experienced during the course was navigating the complex depths of research. For example, the unending need for credible sources, the organization of the paper in a specific style of writing, and the meticulous analysis needed to sieve the information from the vast sources was not an easy task for me at the beginning.

Even though I went through a challenging experience engaging with writing a research paper for the first time, I enjoyed the aspect of citing credible sources in my research as an ethical approach to acknowledge the authors that extensively contributed to the topic of research.  In other words, working with these sources by acquiring important details while eliminating the rest seemed like collecting the items you need for a specific journey, which made the research process more exciting. However, during the research process, I learned how the entire process works effectively. Generating ideas and formulating them cohesively to develop an effective outline was a key factor throughout the process.

Finally, all the segments of the research paper worked collectively by informing each phase, which was an exhilarating exercise. Apart from the organization of the research paper from an abstract to a list of references, I learned that developing premises that align with the thesis statement of the research was critical for an effective research paper.  Upon completion of the exercise, like many professional researchers, I came to recognize my writing skills, innovation, and ability to evolve as a writer. However, mastery of these research writing skills can potentially play a significant role in the modern world whether composing business proposals, advocating for a specific course, or where problem-solving skills are needed.
