Analysis
The current technological
advancement in the field of healthcare has brought significant change in the
global society. This transformation has led to the development of several
healthcare programs such as virtual hybrid hospital-at-home which has
extensively replaced the traditional hospital-at-home models. The paper
scrutinizes two quantitative research articles in the field of healthcare seeking
to determine the level of satisfaction of patients under a Novel Virtual Hybrid
Hospital at Home. Maniaci et al. (2022) in their study titled “Overall patient
experience with a virtual hybrid hospital at home program” delves into the general
patients’ experience with Advanced Care at Home. Secondly, Chadha et al. (2022)
in their study titled “Surgical Patient Satisfaction with a Virtual Hybrid Care
Hotel Model: A Retrospective Cohort Study” offer insights into the experience
of surgical patients under the same program of Advanced Care at Home.
Independent
and Dependent Variables
The two studies use
patient experience or satisfaction as the dependent variable. For instance, the
level of satisfaction for patients under the Advanced Care at Home program is
the main outcome measured on the basis of the responses received from the
survey and Likert Scale questions established. The independent variable is the type
of hospital-at-home model, as this is a factor that potentially impacts or
influences the patient’s feedback. In other words, the researchers are more
interested in gaining an understanding of how the model influences patient
experience compared to the traditional models.
Population
of Interest
Maniaci et al. (2022)
study utilizes a sample population of patients who were admitted to the Care
Hotel at Mayo Clinic in Florida between July 23, 2020, and June 4, 2021. This
population comprises individuals who received the virtual medicine hybrid model
of care after undergoing low-risk surgeries. Similarly, Chadha et al. (2022)
study used a sample population of patients enrolled in the Mayo Clinic Advanced
Care at Home program. The patients received the survey through email and were requested
to provide their feedback on their experience with the virtual hybrid model of
care.
Sample
Population
According to Chadha et
al, (2022) study, the sample population consisted of 93 patients admitted and
Mayo Clinic Care Hotel in Florida. This translates to 93 responses regarding
the virtual medicine hybrid model of care provided at the Care Hotel. On the
other hand, Maniaci et al. (2022) used a sample of 99 patients which translates
to 99 surveys administered to the patients in Mayo Clinic’s Advanced Care at
Home program. However, out of the 99 surveys that were administered, 41
partially or completely finished the surveys and returned them for quantitative
analysis, resulting in a response rate of 41.4%. Convenience sampling where
selecting participants based on their availability over the time period of data
collection was applied in the first study.
Patients
Level of Satisfaction/Experience
In the first study by
Maniaci et al. (2022), data analysis of the Likert-type questions was employed
using standard descriptive statistics to analyze the collected data. Frequency
distribution and percentages were employed to calculate the mean score of each
answered question. Similarly, confidence intervals were calculated using the
mean confidence interval formula based on the sample standard deviation. Additionally,
the Shapiro–Wilk test was used to check if the normal distribution model fit
the observed Likert-type scores. A p-value of ⩽0.05 was considered statistically
significant. According to Maniaci et al. (2022), the patients highly
recommended Advanced care at Home translating to positive experience with the
services offered under the program. Similarly, Chadha et al. (2022), argued
that the respondents preferred both the combination of in-person and virtual
modes of medical care as a means of providing a good overall experience for
patients following low-risk surgeries and procedures.
Conclusion
The two quantitative
research articles underscore the transformational effect of technological
advancement on the healthcare industry. In other words, the findings highlight
the efficacy of the virtual hybrid hospital at home model in improving patient
satisfaction with the virtual hybrid hospital at home. Therefore, it can be
concluded that the progressive evolution of healthcare systems and the emerging
insights contribute heavily to the ongoing debate about optimizing
patient-centered care through innovative tech solutions.
